In April 2001, a state-wide law went into effect in Ohio allowing the birth parent (mother or father) to give up custody of their newborn child without facing any legal consequences. A baby, unharmed and less than three days old, may be turned over to hospital staff, emergency medical services workers or peace officers…no questions asked. The purpose of the law is to save newborns from injury or death by providing a safe, secret alternative to a difficult situation. A 24-hour Hotline offers confidential support and information to callers who may remain anonymous. The Safe Haven Hotline number is 419/265-BABY (419/265-2229).
