A Call to Men: Being Part of the Solution to End Violence Against Women

Violence against women is not exclusively a “women’s issue.” It’s time for men in our community to take a stand and work alongside women to create a community of respect that values men and women equally. Locally, our “Call to Men” is dedicated to providing men and women with an arena to work together to create a community that promotes healthy relationships.

It’s time for

It’s time for those of us who are well-meaning men to start to acknowledge the role male privilege and socialization play in domestic violence, as well as violence against women in general. As well-meaning men, we must begin to acknowledge andown ourresponsibility to bepart of the solution to ending domestic violence.

“Well-Meaning” Men

Most men are well-meaning men. They don’t condone or approve of domestic violence. A well-meaning man wants his wife, partner, daughters, sisters and female friends to be safe and achieve equality in our community. A well-meaning man for all practical purposes is a nice guy, a good man.

to address the issue

Yet, well-meaning men have been socialized to maintain a system of domination, dehumanization and oppression over women. That socialization includes viewing women as less than men, treating women as property and seeing women as objects.

and take action.

As well-meaning men, we must examine the ways this socialization fosters violence against women. We must look at the ways we keep women in “marginalizedroles.”

We must begin to examine the ways we separate ourselves from men who batter, yet at the same time, give them permission to do so. We must speak up. We must take action.
