Attorney General Jim Petro Develops Statistical Tool To Provide Comprehensive Analysis Of Domestic-Violence Problem In Ohio.
“For the first time, we have a comprehensive statewide report that provides specific details about the relationships of the parties involved in domestic disputes,” Mr. Petro said in a statement. “Agencies throughout the state will be able to use this report to focus resources and develop effective solutions to fight the problem.” State law requires BCI to compile an annual domestic-violence report, but the data has been lacking until now, according to the AG’s office. With the improvements, advocates can better track the way local law-enforcement agencies respond to domestic violence incidents. “We anticipate that by simplifying the reporting form and receiving greater compliance, this annual report will provide us with an accurate picture of domestic violence in Ohio this year and going forward,” Ohio Domestic Violence Network Executive Director Nancy Neylon said in a statement included in the AG’s release. “It is our hope that we can use these statistics to help strengthen Ohio's response to domestic violence through public awareness, training and other initiatives.” Of the 86,790 reported victims of domestic violence last year, 19.21% were wives alleging abuse by their husbands, 6.17% were husbands reporting abuse by their wives, 10.54% were parents reporting abuse by their children, and 7.11% were children reporting abuse by their parents, according to the 2004 report. Other incidents involved former spouses, live-in partners, unmarried parents and other family members. The full report is available on the attorney general’s Web site.
